On Friday the whole nation will be blocked by demonstrations against the approval of "Legge Gelmini", a law that seriously cuts down on public funding of education. "We won't pay for your crisis": is the slogan shouted by protesters against Berlusconi governement's choices to destroy public education system. Not only in Italy. In Bruxelles, Paris, Barcelona, Madrid, Granada, Copenhagen students are demonstrating against the neoliberal agenda for the financial crisis diverting money from the public sector to private banks. A tactical action will take place on Friday to reach also Dutch people, keeping them updated on what's going on in Italy and in Europe in these days. We call students, researchers, teachers, activists and sensitive people in Amsterdam to join us to protect knowledge as a common good. Friday 14 th, 2008 H 10.00 Italian Consolate, Vijzelstraat 79, Amsterdam European Anomalous Wave, Amsterdam amsterdam.anomaouswave@autistici.org --- Siamo studenti, ricercatori e lavoratori italiani e olandesi. -------------------------------------------[ RK ] + http://liste.rekombinant.org/wws/subrequest/rekombinant + http://www.rekombinant.org

DECLARATION OF AMSTERDAM
1. THE SITUATIONISTS must take every opportunity to oppose retrograde forces and ideologies, in culture and wherever the question of the meaning of life arises.
2. Nobody shall consider their membership in the SI as a simple agreement of principle; the essential activity of all participants must relate to perspectives elaborated in common, to the necessity of disciplined action, in the practical as well as the public sphere.
3. The possibility of unitary and collective creativity is already announced in the decomposition of the individual arts. The SI cannot justify any attempt to renovate them.
4. The SI's minimum program is the development of complete environments, which must extend to a unitary urbanism, and research into new modes of behavior in relation to these environments.
5. Unitary urbanism is defined as the complex, ongoing activity that consciously recreates man's environment according to the most advanced conceptions in every domain.
6. The solution to problems of housing, traffic, and recreation can only be envisaged in relation to social, psychological and artistic perspectives that are combined in one synthetic hypothesis at the level of daily life.
7. Unitary urbanism, independently of all aesthetic considerations, is the fruit of a new type of collective creativity; the development of this spirit of creation is the prior condition of unitary urbanism.
8. The creation of ambiances favorable to this development is the immediate task of today's creators.
9. All means are usable, on condition that they serve in a unitary action. The coordination of artistic and scientific means must lead to their total fusion.
10. The construction of a situation is the edification of a transient micro-ambiance and of the play of events for a unique moment in the lives of several persons. Within unitary urbanism, it is inseparable from the construction of a general, relatively more lasting ambiance.
11. A constructed situation is a means for unitary urbanism, just as unitary urbanism is the indispensable basis for the construction of situations, in both play and seriousness, in a freer society.

Velimir Khlebnikov is different from some of [...]
the obscure and semi-obscure [poets] in that he does have a fairly
major American press (Harvard) publishing his collected works.
The translator, Paul Schmidt, is excellent, all considering
the fantastic difficulties in approaching the text of this
Russian poet. As Schmidt himself says, "This act of language
must begin in much the same way an actor prepares, in a
similar language act, to create a character on stage."
Khlebnikov's poems were certainly about action, dynamism.
Whatever his politics were (involved with various
Cubo-Futurist groups and later founding an organization called
Presidents of Planet Earth), he found much of his inspiration
from Walt Whitman, and in fact invoked him in several of his
poems ("Where I search for new rhythms, whose beats are animals
and men."). He also constructed his words as constructions,
either corrolating with or pre-dating many avant-garde movements
in other nooks and crannies of the world (for what those
'movements' are worth):
Rutting elephants, battering ivory tusks
That seemed white stone
Beneath an artist's hand.
Stags in rut, with antlers intertwined:
They seemed embraced in ancient intercourse,
In tugging ardors and adulteries.
Rivers hurled themselves into the sea:
Seemed? The hand of one strangled the neck of another.

Personal beauty is a form of power. Look how women wield this power all the time -- and they practically run the planet because guys are so sex-crazed, they literally hand them all other forms of power hand-over-fist.
But the women in the movies are not only beautiful, they're strong and vicious these days. I would say at least 70% of them are what I would call ALIEN WOMEN. To wit:

Manifesto for a Schizo-analysis of Media Culture
By Patricia Pisters (Dept. Media Studies, University of Amsterdam)
1. Contemporary media are characterized by a stammering stream of an ever growing schizophrenic 'logic of addition'.
2. 'Old' mass media like television and cinema are not dead but undead.
3. Schizophrenia points to clinical and critical symptoms of a/v culture.
4. The delirium is socio-political and world historical.
5. The cinematographic regime is already schizo-analytic in conception; this becomes more evident and widespread in contemporary a/v culture.
6. The schizo-analytic regime of the image acknowledges 'the reality of illusions'.
7. Immanent powers of the image present them selves in heterogeneous ways.
8. The virtual is a real power.
9. Images have the power to act.
10. Affect is an autonomous power.
11. Forgers, magicians, charlatans, tricksters, conmen and delusional characters are symptoms and diagnosis makers of the powers of the false.
Curated by Austin, from Rhizome, member curated exhibitions.
The ideology of new art is flawed in the sense that, in general, all art is simply rehashing, recreating, re-presenting something that existed previously. This phenomena is seen most clearly when viewing works of digital art. Appropriation becomes an art form as old news becomes new again. The following works present a way of looking at things, which you may have seen before, differently.

An Introduction, of Sorts

"Terrorism is a way to health. Health is the lusting for infinity and dying of all variants. Health is not stasis. It is not repression of lusting or dying. It is no bonds. The only desire of any terrorist is NO BONDS though terrorists don't desire. Their flaming jumping passions are infinite, but are not them."--Kathy Acker, Blood and Guts in High School

Once in a while it is necessary to remember and reflect upon the words of our ancestors, in this case the visionary artist and thinker Constant Nieuwenhuys.(Ed.)
Text by Constant Nieuwenhuys - from Randstad Magazine The Netherlands 1960
Today's traditional norms simply degrade the masses to a level of inhumanity, fail to acknowledge the potential of technology as a creative means of improving the quality of our existence. These norms are utilitarian, to the motto of 'ora et labora'. In this perspective, creativity is a flight from life, 'play' according to Huizinga's definition: 'a temporary withdrawal from reality' (Homo Ludens). Play is merely recognized as an escape route from a rejectable reality.
Individual contempt for the masses is however as irrational as artistís dislike of the machine that ever since the era of William Morris, remains fashionable with the artistic quasi-barbarians of our times. Artists have long enough been engrossed with their individual expressions and emotions. It is time for them to realise that they are steadily losing all ground beneath their feet, that their so-called innovations, their abstract painting, their experimental poetry, their concrete music remain pointless as long as their endeavours remain isolated acts.
Though we are no longer able to create a new style, we can, instead, create thousands of them: it is here that our strength lies, it is this that constitutes New Babylon.
New Babylon is the name for a new, acceptable reality. The struggle for existence can finally be overcome, utility ceases to determine our actions, creativity is no longer the exception, freedom is not a mere slogan but an accessible way of life.
We are on the eve of the great 'denaturation' of man. Man will no longer be ruled by nature, but he will be able to control nature, to transform it according to his imagination/as he imagines it, to his own image. Natural man will decline, the artistic man is about to be born.

From: ctjacobs@xs4all.nl Subject: Ram Narayana Date: January 10, 2008 1:42:17 AM GMT+01:00
Stephen LaBerge, Lucid Dreaming (New York: Ballantine Books, 1986), pp265-267, Dreaming, Death, and Transcendence."[T]he case of Ram Narayana vividly illustrates how far delusions of grandeur can be taken by the semi-lucid dreamer. Narayana, an Indian physician and editor, had been perplexed by the problem of how to convince "the creatures of his dream, during the dream state, that it really is a dream."
He finally gave up trying, having decided that even if he succeeded, convincing them could serve no useful purpose. Therefore, Narayana resolved to enjoy himself instead and to pass his time while dreaming "as comfortably as possible."
Consequently, next time he went to sleep, he addressed "the assembly of his dream characters" as follows: "Friends, why don't you try to attain the state of extatic and immortal bliss, entirely free from pain of every description?
This state of bliss can be obtained only by entering into the celestial region, the abode of the Supreme Creator.
To this region I go daily and enjoy its pleasures for twelve hours out of every twenty-four. I am the only incarnation and representative of the Supreme One."
Narayana indicated that "the majority of dream creatures believed in the above speech." A minority were skeptical of his claim of being the "Only Manifestation of the Supreme Deity."
What about Krishna, Christ, Buddha, or Mohammed? demanded the doubters.
They received the reply that "all those great men had come from lower regions and were only theoretical in their teachings and nobody ever attained salvation through them, that the dreamer alone came from the highest spiritual plane, and that he would teach them the only sure and practical method of reaching that region."
Having been made the usual promises, they were charged the usual price, being then told the chief condition of initiation was "to have implicit faith in their preceptor, the dreamer."
Narayana went on to explain, in terms well known by the leaders of cults everywhere, that "the most effective means to hypnotize them all in a body was then employed, which consisted of looking intently into the eyes of the guru, the dreamer, while sacred hymns and songs of love and devotion were being recited in a chorus.
They were further impressed with the idea that ultimately every one of them would reach the highest region, after one, two or more re-births, but having complete faith in the dreamer would reach there the soonest."
Narayana claimed that "the method proved so satisfactory that the dreamer was actually worshipped by every one of the dream creatures and was pronounced to be the only true spiritual guide. He now considered himself in no way less fortunate than so many leaders of the various faiths, in the waking world, who enjoy the pleasure of being devotely worshipped by their disciples."
This comical parody of spiritual cults would have its tragic aspect as well, were it not for the fact that Narayana was eventually able to progress beyond this state of inflation.
He dreamed that he fell in among a group of yogis who managed to enlighten him in the following dream: ... another elderly figure from amongst the dream creatures rose from his seat and overawed the assembly with his long grey beard and his yogi's staff.
He began his oration in a curious and amusing manner, though with an authoritative tone, his voice quivering with anger and his gaunt index finger pointing towards the dreamer: "What reason have you to call us your dream creatures and yourself the creator of us all?
If you are our creator we say equally empathetically that so are we the creator of yourself. We are all in the same boat, and you can claim no sort of higher existence than ours. If, however, you want to be convinced of my statement, I can show you the creator of us all, i.e. of yourself as well as ours."
With these words, he struck the dreamer on his head with his heavy staff, who, in consequence, woke up and found himself lying in his bed with his mind extremely puzzled.[15]
The yogi's point is that the dream ego (mistaken for "the dreamer" by Narayana) is just another dream figure.
The actual creator of the dream is not part of the dream at all - being, in fact, the sleeping self.

The time for art has come to denounce its bond with society and to reflect on art itself. Art has come a long way from its middle aged allegations with religions institutions, and regaining some of its magic and ritual origins , during the Renaissance. During the Enlightment its bond went alongside with the development of early capitalism and this bond is pronounced until to date As a consequence of the parallel development of capitalism and the socialication of art, art looses its fundaments with its ritual and the magic origins. During that process, in which as a side effect capitalism got rid of magic and ritual practices by classifying them under religion, art was put at the side of governing power, and agresively untied. Nowadays art is unable to distinguish between its aesthecial and ethical responsibilities the crafting of a work of art implies, and ignorantly think and behave as if it is not the souverain governer of these responsablities. The aesthecical and the ethical is taken over by social institutions , governments, administrations and the like. The autonomous position it should have is ignorantly left behind and easely sold for beauty and lust. The word holy has no meaning anymore, rationalzing the effects of city regeneration, researching culture as another form of commodity, sell, profibility, return on investment have replaced this. |

uhm... how is being complicit in gentrification either
overidentification or a strategy?
here's what I mean, overidtification is usually defined as:
"The concept of 'overidentification' is a concept drawn from the
armoury of psychoanalysis but forged by cultural activists in the
Neue Slowenische Kunst into a weapon against Tito Stalinism and
contemporary neo-liberalism. Overidentification works because it
draws attention to the way the overt message in art, ideology and
day dreaming is supplemented by an obscene element,
the hidden reverse of the message that contains the illicit
charge of enjoyment."
